“The magic of the desert is hard to define. Why does the sight of a landscape of empty sand, rock, slab and rubble stir the spirits more than a view of lush garden fields and woods? Why does the lifeless play of light, colour and distance have such an invigorating, fascinating and elating effect? Perhaps because no limitations are imposed by other forms of life; perhaps because the mind of the beholder is presented with a Fata Morgana of unlimited freedom. And on such far horizons, the outline of a mountain draws the eye like an island in the endless ocean.“
Henno Martin – The Sheltering Desert
SUNSETS AND OPEN SPACES
Why is it such a special place?
This is a question that we have asked ourselves and heard our guests ask countless times during our time in the Namib Desert.
Why is it that I can stare at a view of almost nothing for so long and remain fascinated? It is not an answer that can be given but one that can only be answered through experience. To see it through a car window is special, but to be immersed in it aboard your bicycle is extraordinary. Although these same bicycles are the core reason for our trips to Namibia, a lot of the memories we bring back with us are the moments we don’t spend on the bikes and spend with the endless views instead, have a look at the video clip for just a small taste.
DISCOVER THE DESERT
NAMIBIA
So, it’s with that thought that I urge you to book for one of our Discover the Desert 2019 trips. 3 of the trips are booked up already, leaving just 4 left. They will be running from May through to the end of June so will be perfectly placed to escape the first grips of winter down south here. If our 2018 trips are anything to go by then they’ll be just as special, just dialled up a little further.
With the Namibian tours finished for the year, we now swop the desert for the beaches; the white sands for golden sands; the Tafel Lager for 2M and the Eisbein’s for fish braais. The Mozambique tours will keep us busy until the end of October, but we also have put some time aside for our new destinations so a couple of you may get a call up to be our test pilots for some new trails a little closer to home in a few weeks’ time.
SIMPLY BIKE OPENS IN MORNINGSIDE
We’d also like to take the opportunity to let all our previous workshop customers know that Kirk Meyer’s new store Simply Bike in Morningside is up and running. He’s in a very familiar place for some of you, the old Morningside Cycles. Simply Bike has the spares and knowledge to deal with your specific Yeti Cycles needs as well as any other servicing and spare part requirements.
Give him a shout or pop past for a coffee and a chat.
